HAKEEM LAPOINTE

Under Amselysen, Montreal-based artist Hakeem Lapointe strips genres like experimental, ambient, techno, noise, punk, IDM, into confrontational leftfield electronic music. Their live shows are challenging audiences’ comfort; intense, unpredictable performances that force audiences out of passive listening. Amselysen’s sounds become fields of subversion, where conventions go to die.
The project's uncompromising vision has earned recognition from the underground's most forward-thinking artists. Amselysen has shared the stage with an impressive roster, including Caterina Barbieri, Lorenzo Senni, Courtesy, Dreamcrusher, Marie Davidson, ABADIR, MESH/Hesaitix, Orchestroll, Myriam Bleau, and Racine, amongst others.
Founder of the label and event series EAF (Electronic Assault Front), Lapointe has been stoking the flames of the alternative electronic scene in Montreal, welcoming new and established talents such as:
Jan Jelinek, FOODMAN, Hesaitix, African-American Sound Recordings, Heith, Roméo Poirier, Orchestroll, Nadah El Shazly, Sisso and Maiko, CECILIA, VISIO, Sense Fracture, and more.
The project has already earned the trust of MUTEK, SAT, Akousma, and Flux through its ambitious curation and strange conceptual approaches.

GOLF
Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden is a misconception on the word golf that has been propagated for years, but so is the idea that biology equate to gender, an idea strongly promoted during 2nd wave feminism. This double intrusion of a trans woman as a cis woman as a sleazy, greasy business man golfer makes playful fun at "terf" art and reclaims that space in the art world as its own.

(Stop) Beating Yourself Up
(Stop) Beating Yourself Up is, fundamentally, a dismantling of pain, ego, disappointment, worries, and self-appreciation and it repackages this unfinished process into an emotional cinematic performance that challenges my own perception of my feelings, and how others perceive those feelings.

Landmarks
Reflecting on the theme of scale lead me to a few observations:
I) Scale is inherently anthropocentric.
II) Scale is a tool dedicated to expand, reduce, or adjust dimensions that do not relate to such anthropocentrism,
III) Thus, without scale, our comprehension of the physical world is muddled and re-mystified.

So, appealing to the concept of scaling down to human perception, geography came about as perhaps the most primordial and prominent topic.
Geographical data is expressed through mapping, and the input data is, in the traditional sense, landmarks:
they punctuate the space as to give measurements to the physical realm.
Now, shifting to the realm of abstraction, memory, thoughts, and language are mapped out through documentation, with the most common one being writing.
In that sense, sentences form the maps of once-abstract memory while words act as landmarks.
Therefore, in a playful reversal, Landmarks seeks to break the anthropocentric nature of writing as a scaling tool
and reinsert memory into abstraction by physically spacing out thought and challenging the formation of memory.
